This week’s edition by: David

Ok guys, it’s another week and another edition of the Speedo. This is my first of the new year, so Happy new Year to you all and hope that it brings whatever your hearts desire!
We’ll have the usual news, reviews and previews and a little something to keep you distracted when you’ve had too much Callan! Read on!

EVENTS LAST WEEK

Kel’s lecture on Australian nature went down a storm with the three students that attended. However, they kind of hijacked it and turned it into a lecture on how to get to Australia and what to do when you are there. Well done guys!

The monthly Kids Club also went well, with five children attending for the usual fun and games. This wasn’t just a walk in the park though, with the kid’s practising their English with food and numbers!

Gosia’s Travel Club was another success, with a few students attending to discuss all aspects of travel, and to talk about where in the world people had been. I wish I had been there, all this talk of seeing the world makes me want to go and see what all the fuss is about! I find myself watching my only English TV channel (the Travel Channel) even more now!

EVENTS THIS WEEK

This week sees three different clubs, the first Hugh and Caroline’s Intermediate Conversation Club. This takes place at the Totu Café, on Wyszynskiego Street, at 7.30pm tonight, Monday 29th. Thursday night (1st Feb) sees Sean host the Advanced Conversation Club at 7.30pm, and Friday (2nd Feb) sees Brian and myself host Rock Climbing Club. If you want to attend any of these clubs, then sign up with the secretaries! See you there!

Kids Say the Funniest Things

- In the middle of the 18th century, all the morons (stupid people - should be "Mormons") moved to Utah.

- Syntax (“syntax” means “word order”) is all the money collected at the church from sinners.

- Water is composed of two gins. Oxygin and Hydrogin. Oxygin is pure gin. Hydrogin is gin and water.

- The people who followed the lord were called the twelve opossums. (A possum is an animal.)

- When a person gets kissed for the first time, they fall down and they don't get up for at least an hour

- The four seasons are salt, pepper, mustard, and vinegar.

- The word “trousers” is an uncommon noun because it is singular at the top and plural at the bottom.

- The future of ''I give'' is ''I take.''

- Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.

- The Magna Carta provided that no free men should be hanged twice for the same offence."

That’s all for this week, take care and see you next time!

bEZ sENSu - Using the verb 'to be', replace the word 'snow' in the following piece of text in order for it to make sense: Today snow Thursday. Yesterday snow Wednesday. Tomorrow will snow Friday. It snow cold but I snow happy.

Music Club
Saturday, 8pm @ London Pub, Plac Piastów.

Once again, Marcin will be hosting his famous music club, accompanied by a young, long-haired American boy with a guitar called Jeff (the boy’s called Jeff, not the guitar). The night usually proves to be a popular event with everybody so if you want to come, the usual deal applies. Do I need to say it? Get your name down on the list in the secretaries’ office.

Phrases related to the body (continued)

Ankle biter – the ankle is part of the body, just above the foot, and a biter is someone who bites. So, literally, it means someone who bites ankles, and is used to refer to children as they are smaller than adults, although I have never known a child to bite the ankles of an adult.

Cauliflower ear – this basically means a swollen ear, for example, a boxer might have this after a fight. A cauliflower is a large, ugly-looking vegetable.

Over my head – this expression can be used when talking about something you don’t understand e.g. transitive verbs go over my head.

Bad hair day – if you have a bad hair day then your hair looks untidy. Bald people never have bad hair days.

Butterflies in my stomach – this refers to the feeling you get in your stomach when you are nervous e.g. before the exam, I had butterflies in my stomach.

Politics

FASCISM: You have two cows. The government takes both, hires you to take care of them, and sells you the milk.

PURE COMMUNISM: You have two cows. Your neighbours help you to take care of them, and you all share the milk.

RUSSIAN COMMUNISM: You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the government takes all the milk.

DICTATORSHIP: You have two cows. The government takes both and shoots you.

Word of the Day: Trunk

The word ‘trunk’, believe it or not, is used to refer to a number of things:

1.
The trunk of a car, which is referred to as ‘the boot’ in British English, is the rear part of a car in which we generally put things e.g. suitcases, shopping, dead people and spare wheels.

2.
An old wooden box used
to put things in.

3.
An elephant’s nose.

4.
The body of a tree.

That’s all for this week… have a good one :) Daniel

For the one who left me a comment. I don't know who you are. In answer to your question, maybe I will, maybe I won't. Who knows? :p David

Friday at 5:30 pm in room 8.
Come to Linda's lecture on Australian animals. If you want to know more about Dingos, Wallabies, Kangaroos and Koalas then get your name down for it in the secretaries' office.

Welcome back. The first Speedo of 2007 kicks off (begins) with a quick look back at 2006 – it was great! Let’s hope the new year brings us all a slice of the good life. Perhaps you’re wondering what our teachers got up to (did) over the Christmas period. Caroline was in Belgium and Gosia in Austria. David, Sean, Tanya, and myself spent Christmas in the UK, whilst Hugh and Jolene explored the Baltic states with some teachers from Wrocław. PHOTOS
