Welcome!

This is the first official Speedo of the new school term, and we’d just like to say a big hello to students old and new. Some of you who were here last year will remember teachers like Daniel, David, Chris, Brian, Marcin, and Kama, but we have four new people to introduce: Marshall Peck from USA, Matthew Ford from Canada, Tom Sutton from Australia, and Magda Ali from Gliwice. So, you can expect to hear spoken English from around the world. Some of you might be wondering what some of the teachers from last year are doing now. Well, I can tell you that Tanya, Jolene, Kel, and Linda are all in South Korea, Hugh went to Wroclaw, and Paul is probably still packing his suitcase.

The Adventures of Bobby Callan

Bobby Callan is an English teacher in Poland who believes that Robin Callan, the inventor of the Callan Method, is his great uncle. This is the story of Bobby’s mission to find Robin Callan.

Part #1

It was a cold September day and Bobby was on his way to the school. A man stopped him in the street and asked for the time.
“Sorry, I don’t speak Polish,” Bobby told the man.
“Oh. You speak English. Are you American?” The man asked.
“No, I’m not American but I’m British,” Bobby replied.
“Good. I don’t like Americans. An American stole my umbrella, and I caught him and asked him why he did it, and do you know what he told me?” Bobby shook his head.
“He told me that someone had stolen his umbrella.”
“So, he thought he could steal yours?” Bobby asked.
“Yes. If somebody steals your umbrella, do you think that gives you the right to steal somebody else’s?” the man asked him.
“No, certainly not,” Bobby replied. “He should be thrown into prison.”
“Well, he’s dead now anyway.” The man said.
“Oh! Did you kill him?” Bobby asked.
“No. He fell from the top of a very high building.” Bobby wondered if the man had actually pushed the American off the top of a very high building.
“If the police catch him and charge him with murder,” Bobby thought, “he will first be taken to court and if found guilty, thrown into prison.”
Later that day, Bobby bought a copy of Gazeta Wyborcza, and the front page read: Man falls from top of high building. Bobby was reading the newspaper when Huxley entered the room.
“What are you doing? What are you doing?” Huxley asked.
“I’m trying to read this newspaper,” Bobby replied, “but I can’t read Polish very well.”
“When are you going to England, Bobby?”
“My plane leaves tomorrow,” Bobby said. “I’m going to stay with Mr. and Mrs. Brown. They said they would help me find Robin Callan.”
“Why do you want to find Robin Callan?” Huxley asked.
“I think he might be my great uncle,” Bobby replied.
“Is he physically or spiritually great?”
“He’s spiritually great, I think.”
“He must be quite old. The Callan Method was first published in 1960,” Huxley said.
“Yes, I know,” said Bobby. “That’s why it has words like splendid and woman-teacher in it. Things have changed a little since 1960. I’m going to ask my great uncle to update the method. That’s if Robin Callan really is my great uncle.”
“Good luck!” said Huxley, “and say hello to Mr. and Mrs. Brown for me.”
